Canada

Canada is a treasure house of natural beauty and cosmopolitan sophistication. This nation of vast proportions exudes the irresistible allure of a magnificent land with a deep cultural history and unsurpassed, primordial splendor. Dynamic urban centres and contrast pristine landscapes are home to diverse cultures of aboriginal, European and Asian descent, creating a welcoming nation of truly global citizens.

Canada’s major cities include: Ottawa (the capital), Charlottetown, Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria.

The provinces and territories of Canada combine to make up the world's second-largest country by area. The ten provinces are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The three territories are Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon.

Edging the Pacific Ocean, British Columbia is the westernmost of Canada’s provinces. Vancouver Island holds the provincial capital of Victoria, famed for its Butchart Gardens. Vancouver is one of the country’s largest cities, offering cultural and recreational amenities in abundance. In the interior, the Cariboo embodies Western living, with stockyards, dude ranches and rodeos.

North of British Columbia, the Yukon Territory is a sparsely populated frontier of dramatic scenery dominated by the mighty Yukon River.

A vast, flat landscape of endless prairie farmland and infinite blue sky, the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are Canada’s heartland. Major cities are Calgary, famed for its Stampede, Alberta’s capital of Edmonton with one of the largest shopping malls in the world, Manitoba’s Winnipeg, a capital with surprising options, and Regina, Saskatchewan’s high quality of life capital.

Ontario is Canada’s most populous province and it's a land of lakes and rivers. Its southern city of Toronto rose on the north shore of Lake Ontario to become the nation’s largest metropolis and a financial and cultural hub. Toronto’s CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, zoo and science center should not be missed. Another must-see, the world-famous Niagara Falls form midway in the Niagara River’s course from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Ottawa is Ontario’s seat of national government and home to fine museums and the superb National Gallery of Art.

Quebec province encompasses the treeless tundra of the forbidding north, the Laurentian Mountain Range, and forests to the south that cover much of its land. North America’s bastion of French-Canadian culture, the province retains remnants of France’s 17th-century continental empire, best seen in Quebec City’s quaint Upper Town and Lower Town. In contrast, Montreal is a modern city, known for its international jazz festival, gastronomy and boutiques; the Olympic Park and the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal are also highlights.

The Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island occupy the Atlantic Ocean side of Canada. Their northeast neighbor, Newfoundland and Labrador, lies in the country’s eastern extreme. These seacoast provinces evidence their Scottish-English heritage in the major cities of Halifax, St. John’s, Saint John and Charlottetown. Newfoundland’s L’Anse aux Meadows traces the presence of Vikings, and Nova Scotia’s Fortress of Louisbourg captures the French-English struggle for the New World.

This immense northwestern outpost, sparsely settled except for its capital of Yellowknife, has two World Heritage Sites: Wood Buffalo National Park and Nahanni National Park Reserve. Its spectacular terrain and indigenous cultures are major attractions as well.
Nunavut, Canada’s rooftop territory, stretching north from Manitoba’s border, takes up a fifth of the country’s landmass. This land of ice and snow is the ancestral home of the Inuit, whose carvings and crafts are magnets for collectors. Though tourism facilities are evolving, Nunavut’s national parks, heritage rivers, Arctic ranges, native communities and wildlife (caribou, whales, musk ox, walrus and polar bears) attract adventure travelers.
